    Get PDF
Big Data for sensor networks and collaborative systems have become ever more important in the digital economy and is a focal point of technological interest while posing many noteworthy challenges. This research addresses some of the challenges in the areas of online collaboration and Big Data for sensor networks. This research demonstrates WikiSensing (www.wikisensing.org), a high performance, heterogeneous, collaborative data cloud for managing and analysis of real-time sensor data. The system is based on the Big Data architecture with comprehensive functionalities for smart city sensor data integration and analysis. The system is fully functional and served as the main data management platform for the 2013 UPLondon Hackathon. This system is unique as it introduced a novel methodology that incorporates online collaboration with sensor data. While there are other platforms available for sensor data management WikiSensing is one of the first platforms that enable online collaboration by providing services to store and query dynamic sensor information without any restriction of the type and format of sensor data. An emerging challenge of collaborative sensor systems is modelling and assessing the trustworthiness of sensors and their measurements. This is with direct relevance to WikiSensing as an open collaborative sensor data management system. Thus if the trustworthiness of the sensor data can be accurately assessed, WikiSensing will be more than just a collaborative data management system for sensor but also a platform that provides information to the users on the validity of its data. Hence this research presents a new generic framework for capturing and analysing sensor trustworthiness considering the different forms of evidence available to the user. It uses an extensible set of metrics that can represent such evidence and use Bayesian analysis to develop a trust classification model. Based on this work there are several publications and others are at the final stage of submission. Further improvement is also planned to make the platform serve as a cloud service accessible to any online user to build up a community of collaborators for smart city research.Open Acces

A Feasible Solution for the Challenges Faced in Job Searching and the Recruitment Process

    Get PDF
The competitive job market makes it difficult for people to find the best job opportunity that suits them well. A job seeker must apply for a considerably higher number of vacancies to at least be selected for an interview. There is no way for a job seeker to keep track of the application status, or to know the reason for rejections in the traditional application process. Not only job seekers but also recruiters face issues in the process as they receive many applications per day. There is a high chance for them to miss the most suitable candidates. This research paper aims to propose a web-based system to address the difficulties faced by both job seekers and job recruiters by analyzing the existing issues. The functionality of the proposed system will be based on four main components. Those components are considered user and inquiry management, vacancy management, application management, and assessments and interview management. User-friendliness and usability will be given priority in this proposed system

Throwing velocity is undoubtedly considered as one of the crucial factors that affects output of a baseball game. To improve throwing velocity, numerous training methods and approaches are being used. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find the effect of the resistance band and weight training on throwing velocity of age (27±3), (mean ± SD) club level baseball players in Sri Lanka. Forty baseball players were recruited for the 8-week training program based on the inclusion criteria and availability of players. Initially, athletes were assigned into 3 groups: a control group (n=10), a weight training group (n=15), and a resistance band training group (n=15). The weight training group performed 6 upper body exercises by using barbells and dumbbells while the resistance band training group engaged in 6 upper body exercises with blue and red coloured bands. Moreover, the control group was only allowed to perform their daily routine baseball practices which were 3 days per week and 3 hours per day. Throwing velocity was measured by using a radar gun, and upper body strength was measured using the one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press test to determine the relationship between strength and throwing velocity. Both test results were evaluated by using pre-test and post-tests’ descriptive and inferential statistics. The weight training group and the resistance band group showed significant differences in 1RM bench press and the radar gun tests while the control group showed only a significant difference in the strength test. In addition, the control group revealed no significant difference in throwing velocity. Furthermore, the weight training group showed the greatest improvement in throwing velocity and 1RM bench press tests, and then the resistance band group followed the same. In conclusion, Strength training and resistance band training can be utilized to develop strength in the upper body and it may help to develop throwing velocity in other throwing sports, such as cricket, throw ball and so on. Real-Time Sign Language Translator

    Get PDF
Sign language is so widespread that people with hearing/speech impairments are familiar with it, and others are unfamiliar with it. As a result, there is a significant communication gap between people with speech and hearing impairments and the rest of the general population. A human sign language interpreter is a common solution for bridging this gap. However, because the number of sign language interpreters is small in comparison to the number of deaf and mute people in the world, some deaf and mute people cannot afford to use a human interpreter all of the time when communicating with others. This communication must be automated so that the deaf-mute community does not rely on human interpreters. This paper focuses on developing a system that can translate American Sign Language into words/sentences and vice versa in real-time, with some extra features that will help remove the communication barrier between ordinary and hearing/talking impaired people. The main function is to detect and identify sign language performed by the user. Initially, the system is trained to detect and identify signs using object detection and motion-tracking techniques. A convolutional neural network model was trained on a manually created ASL data set. The identified signs are then translated into English to form grammatically correct sentences. A text-to-text transformer built on an encoder-decoder architecture is used to detect grammatical errors and provide correct sentences. To further improve effectiveness, the system incorporates a feature to translate an image containing English text into American Sign Language. Furthermore, the system consists of a voice-to-sign language translator and a virtual sign keyboard. The methodology has been explained in further sections

Bridge the Gap Between Deaf and Normal

Communication is the exchange of ideas between individuals. Humans communicate verbally, in writing, or visually. In everyday life, most people communicate verbally. This is because it is the easiest and most efficient method of communication. Although the hearing people communicate verbally, the deaf cannot exchange their thoughts in the same manner. Therefore, people with hearing impairments use the british sign language to communicate with each other. However, it is difficult for the deaf to communicate like the hearing people. In addition, they find it challenging to perpetrate the activities performed by the hearing people in their daily life. Thus, this paper proposes a system that not only enables the deaf to communicate with the hearing people but also performs their daily life activities. The proposed system is able to convert a text in a picture or video into a british sign language and a video in british sign language into standard text. In addition, hearing people can use it to learn the british sign language method
